Chocolate City Music is a Nigerian record label founded in 2005 by lawyers Audu Maikori, Paul Okeugo and Yahaya Maikori, growing out of a Jos nightclub and arts collective the trio had run since 1997. It is the music arm of the wider Chocolate City Group, which also runs distribution, live events and media businesses.
The label is independently owned. Hakeem Bello-Osagie joined the Group’s board as chairman in 2012, and M.I Abaga ran the label as CEO from 2015 until his departure in 2020 to start his own imprint, Incredible Music. Abuchi Peter Ugwu now heads the label. Since March 2019, Chocolate City has distributed through Warner Music Group, a partnership rather than a sale of equity.
Based in Lagos, Chocolate City signed and developed M.I Abaga, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, Asa, Brymo and Djinee over two decades, and is counted among Nigeria’s longest-running independent labels.
